A decoupling capacitor selected only by capacitance value and case size often underperforms in the final assembly. Three parameters deserve attention during schematic review.
First, apply voltage derating. Ceramic capacitors in X5R and X7R dielectrics lose a significant portion of their nominal capacitance when biased close to the rated voltage, so a 10 V part on a 5 V rail is usually a safer choice than a 6.3 V part.
Second, check effective series resistance and impedance curves. The self-resonant frequency determines where the capacitor stops behaving capacitively, which directly affects high-frequency noise suppression.
Third, confirm temperature characteristics against the operating environment of the product. Industrial and automotive applications typically require X7R or better, while consumer devices may accept X5R.
